• Install GNU/Linux form a CD/DVD (If you find drives to your computer)
• Install GNU/Linux from a USB drive
• Install GNU/Linux from a network mirror(Advanced; can be tried any time later in 15 days)

• Synaptic Package Manager
• apt-get

Install the following packages. Remove a couple of them. Update and upgrade. Basically you will be learning to use Synaptic and Apt!

anjuta
apache
mysql
php
python
gimp
ssh-server
git
inkscape
kdenlive
blender
audacity
build-essentials
live-helper
make
gcc
vi
xchat

By the end of the workshop we might be using some/all of the above installed packages.

You can read a lot about all these in the Internet

To browse Internet you need to set the proxy variable in the browser(firefox/iceweasel)

Goto: Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Network, Settings, Manual Proxy Configuration

Ask the volunteer for the relevant info on the proxy ip address and port numbers.
